Millennium Mambo is a 2001 Taiwanese film directed by the legendary Hou Hsaio-hsien. Set in a dream-like Taipei and the pulsating beat of the city’s booming club scene is the beautiful Vicky at the center. The film depicts a young woman trapped in the whiplash of a toxic relationship. But beneath an intimate view of Taipei’s youth culture is Taiwan itself. Themes of alienation capture Taiwan’s identity crisis; a country trapped between the KMT’s authoritarian rule and the rapid acceleration of hyper globalization during the arrival of a new millennium. You will hear some selections from the original soundtrack by Lim Giong, music from Taiwanese/Asian artists and some club classics of the late 90s-early 2000s to welcome the coming of a new century at the time.
